Re: column of 3/25/88--royal family surname [The Straight Dope]

The bookies in London were bettin'

The royal name used to be Wettin.

The response from the British

May as well have been Yiddish

For all the straight answers we're gettin'.

Anon there was yet more dissent,

To a new notion credence was lent:

That when 'Bert was a nipper

His last name was Wipper;

An idea whose time came and went.

Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was tossed.

And Windsor is soon to be lost.

Was Mountbatten added

'Cause Liz had just had it?

Well, that Guelf has yet to be crossed.
