Action, Drama
South Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk wrote the screenplay for this nihilistic action comedy (2008) about a gangster movie being shot amid a real-life gang war in Seoul. After the temperamental leading man (Kang Ji-whan) puts his costar in the hospital, the only suitable replacement he can find to play the villain is a genuine mobster who once dreamed of an acting career (charismatic newcomer So Ji-sub). As the two sample each other's lives, director Jang Hun (Kim's assistant director on The Bow) explores the opposites-attract dualism of the buddy movie, though his bleak conclusion suggests that, for one protagonist to survive, the other must perish. The stylistic flourishes include a character being bludgeoned with an antique Buddha. In Korean with subtitles.
Director: Hun Jang
