In Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, a man turns into an animal; in the author's "A Report to an Academy," an animal turns into a man. The latter story is narrated by a monkey named Rotpeter, who relates to a body of scholars how, after being captured by humans, he taught himself to speak, dress, and smoke a pipe. Rachel DuBose’s new adaptation is faithful to the original, but the tale loses much of its force and strangeness in Jake Fruend’s gentlemanly staging for Mercy Street Theatre Company. Though Mark Maxwell brings some savage glee to the role of Rotpeter’s enthusiastic and cruel keeper, Courtney Abbott, as the title character, is so hoity-toity that it becomes difficult to see the pathos in the ape’s predicament. —Zac Thompson
