Roscoe Mitchell & Mike Reed

When: Sat., Aug. 16, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $20, $15 in advance
It’s been years since Roscoe Mitchell played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and decades since he lived here; nowadays the septuagenarian reedist is based in California, where he teaches at Mills College. But he’s never forsaken his Chicago connections, particularly those to artists who play with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians—and he continues to develop new creative partnerships as well. This duo is evidence of both. Chicago drummer Mike Reed, more than three decades younger than Mitchell, is hardly a new kid on the block, but his ideas invigorate the elder’s thorny playing. On their 2014 CD In Pursuit of Magic (482 Music), Mitchell shifts adroitly between several saxophones and flutes, using Reed’s surging tempos, sensitive brushwork, and varying density of attack as a launching pad and backdrop for extraordinarily long, convoluted linear forays full of tension and surprise. This concert celebrates the CD’s release; note the early start time. —Bill Meyer
