More like lite rock, actually, and that adjective goes double for the story. Monica wants to escape Glasgow to become an international punk sensation; Ian would rather stay home and drink himself under the table. Without much of a reason, the two form a band, and the rest plays out like an episode of Behind the Music. As in Enda Walsh's similarly structured Once, the duo in Paul Scott Goodman and Miriam Gordon's 2009 musical try to navigate the intricacies of artistic and personal relationships, though neither get a very subtle treatment. Benjamin Brownson's Broken Nose Theatre production is a little too saccharine to offset Rooms's schlockier plot twists, but Matt Deitchman and Hillary Marren's musical performances as the leads provide an emotionally rich tribute to the new-wave era. —Dan Jakes
