Rollerball | Chicago Reader

Lifeless, uninspired, and crammed with enough hints of intellectual consistency to give the socially conscious critical establishment shivers of excitement. James Caan stars in this Norman Jewison mess from 1975, about a brilliant survivor of 2018's ultimate spectator sport—a combination of roller derby, hockey, gladiatorial combat, and hopscotch—in a quandary because the corporate superconglomerates that now control the world don't 'low no survivors, no heroes, no individuals. An ideological hydra—and Jewison's violent mise-en-scene isn't all that competent either. With John Houseman, Maud Adams, and John Beck. R, 122 min.
