Role Models

Sarcastic Paul Rudd and vulgar Seann William Scott run afoul of the law, get sentenced to 150 hours of community service, and wind up mentoring younger variations on themselves: for Rudd a nerdy teen who's involved in live-action medieval role-playing (the bespectacled Christopher Mintz-Plasse of Superbad), and for Scott a gloriously rude black kid who shares his obsession with boobs (Bobb'e J. Thompson). This superior comedy features some of the same faces as Judd Apatow's movies (Ken Jeong, a hysterically funny Jane Lynch), but writer-director David Wain, a veteran of the cable sketch series Stella and The State, steers clear of any coming-of-age emotionality. The general tone is one of crusty, unapologetic misanthropy, driven home by the formidable Rudd (who also kicked in on the script). With Elizabeth Banks. R, 99 min.
