Put Superbad's Michael Cera in a Weird Al Yankovic wig and you'd have Constantine Maroulis's Drew, the ingratiating wannabe cock-rocker who works at a Sunset Strip bar and falls hard for the corn-fed new cocktail waitress. In this jukebox homage to 1980s hair-metal (the playlist includes hits from Poison, Whitesnake, and Twisted Sister), Maroulis provides a sweet counterpoint to the bombast, delivering power ballads and throwaway one-liners with heart as well as note-perfect precision. Playwright Chris D'Arienzo wisely takes a page from Urinetown, incorporating a narrator who comments on the ridiculousness of the story as it unfolds. It's cheesy as hell, but like the bands it sends up, Rock of Ages wants "nothin' but a good time" and largely delivers. --Kerry Reid
