Robot & Frank

In this comedy of the near future, robots have become commonplace, and a frail, increasingly forgetful old man (Frank Langella) is saddled by his neglectful children (James Marsden, Liv Tyler) with a walking-and-talking cyborg (given cool voice by Peter Sarsgaard) who serves as his nurse and butler. Unfortunately screenwriter Christopher D. Ford can't leave it at that, and the great cast (which also includes Susan Sarandon) struggles with an increasingly silly plot after the old man, a retired cat burglar, decides to program his new pal to help with a series of heists. Langella and Sarandon have some lovely, flirtatious scenes together, but the gravity of their relationship, and the movie in general, is undercut by the crime high jinks. Jake Schreier directed.
