Re: “Chicago comedy has a real gender problem

I'm somewhat baffled by Ms. Weiss' obsessing/whining over the gender/ethnicity of the TV cartoon character "Caillou" in the first half of her essay. Besides it being somewhat of a non sequitur to the rest of the column, her comments gave me pause: Personally, I wouldn't particularly WANT Caillou to represent any identity I was associated with -- gentleness is nice, but he's arguably the weakest, most helpless character I've ever seen on TV; a little girl half his size could probably blow him over. I would think that he would be just the kind of male figure someone with Ms. [Hope I'm using the right title] Weiss' perspective would like; after all, anyone stronger and more competent might inspire young boys to grow up to become oppressors of women.

Beyond that, I'm reminded of the time the commentator on the Weekend Update segment of Saturday Night Live read aloud a news item about a fundamentalist minister who had claimed (and expressed outrage) that Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie were a gay couple; the commentator then turned to the camera and said, "Listen, I'm only going to say this once -- Bert and Ernie are PUPPETS!! GET OVER IT!!!"
