Ribfest Chicago

Megafaun, the Heartless Bastards, and 25 tons of pork

On top of 25 tons of smoked pork, this weekend's Ribfest Chicago also has two stages of rock 'n' roll, blues, country, and more. Founded in 1999 as a way for barbecue masters in and around Chicago to compete for the "best ribs" crown, the fest has expanded into a three-day affair, and this year its two stages are sponsored by Bud Light and your friends here at the Reader. Music on Fri 6/8 begins at 5 PM, and the Bud Light Stage (4000 N. Lincoln) features J. Roddy Walson & the Business, the Wanton Looks, and Sissy Mena; at 6 PM the Chicago Reader Stage (4165 N. Lincoln) hosts RibMania III, the only professional rib-eating contest in the midwest, followed by a set from the Spinto Band. (Don't think you have what it takes to overeat with the pros at RibMania? The Black Rock Pub & Kitchen at 3612 N. Damen hosts an amateur version of the contest on Thu 6/7 at 6:30 PM.) On Sat 6/9 music starts at noon: the Features, Pet Lions, the Van Goghs, and Kerosene Stars on the Bud Light Stage; Megafaun, Common Loon, the Lawrence Peters Outfit, and Old Shoe on the Reader Stage. The music on Sun 6/10 kicks off at noon as well; the Bud Light Stage features performances from the Heartless Bastards, Gold Motel, Stolen Silver, and Village, while the Reader Stage bookings include Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts (that's Rick's son), Precious Blood, and Sarah & the Tall Boys. The festival's Kids Square will be open Saturday noon-8 PM and Sunday noon-7 PM, providing the little ones with music, games, inflatables, and other entertainment. The main hub of the festival is the intersection of Lincoln, Irving Park, and Damen, and the grounds close each day at 10 PM. Admission is a $5 suggested donation, and proceeds benefit various local schools, community nonprofits, greening efforts, and outreach programs via the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce.
