On its self-titled debut for Thrill Jockey, this improvising power trio from Brooklyn distinguishes itself with heavy doses of Mediterranean psychedelia. Guitarist Dave Shuford (aka D. Charles Speer of No-Neck Blues Band) spent about four years working on his 2011 solo album, Arghiledes (Thrill Jockey), learning the rudiments of a variety of instruments used in traditional Greek rembetika and Turkish music—especially bouzouki and baglama. He doesn't play them particularly conventionally there, and in Rhyton he starts from those ideas and goes even further out, deploying some wiggy amplified saz to create a heavy, mind-warping album. Supported by drummer Spencer Herbst (Messages) and bassist Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills), Shuford embraces relatively simple, repetitive hard-rocking structures on most of the album's five tracks ("Dale Odaliski" is more spaced-out), and the motific development and scuzzy aura of his pedal-hopping elaborations keep the music gripping. —Peter Margasak Turn to Crime and Solar Fox open.
