As a performer Robert Alda oozed all the greasy insincerity his son Alan has so notably repressed. This 1945 feaure was his film debut, and he plays George Gershwin as a slick, smiling guy you wouldn't buy a used concerto from. Alexis Smith is the love interest; the rest is the usual Warners biopic stuff—success, failure, manufactured conflicts. Irving Rapper directed; with Oscar Levant, Charles Coburn, Julie Bishop, and Paul Whiteman, whose band plays the title tune (all the way through).
