Retox, Whores, the Ox King, In the Weeds

When: Sat., Feb. 28, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10, $8.98 in advance
A Retox track is like a really dense piece of flash fiction, or a quick slug of an unusually complex whiskey, or a punch in the face delivered by a genius scientist. It’s quick, fierce, extremely potent, and will leave you wondering what the hell happened. Cofounded by Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian (both of the Locust and Head Wound City), Retox has never wasted a moment or a note; the average song is less than two minutes in length. Their first album, Ugly Animals, was released on Ipecac in 2011, and since 2013—the year Serbian left the band—they’ve been with Epitaph, who just released their second full-length, Beneath California. On it they branch out a bit: “Let’s Not Keep in Touch” and “Strong Wrong Opinion” are both over three minutes, which seems indulgent. Retox sacrifice nothing in punch, though, with their slightly surf and rockabilly rhythmic chug backing up bursts of wild Beat-ish poetry, dark and lovely. —Monica Kendrick
