Sandra Morgan. Sharon Polifrone. Robert Morgan. Barbara Haffner. David Schrader. To many local concertgoers, these names are synonymous with quality musicianship. Among our town's finest free-lancers--regular affiliations include Music of the Baroque and the Lyric Opera orchestra--the fivesome collaborated in numerous chamber concerts over the last decade before deciding to have a go at a subscription season. Now known as the Rembrandt Chamber Players, they're riding high on the momentum of the excellent notices they got last year. The season opener capitalizes on their unusual mix of flute, violin, oboe, cello, and keyboard. Included are two seldom-revived platinum oldies from the 50s: Elliot Carter's Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Harpsichord (1952) and Vaughan Williams 10 Blake Songs (1957). The sonata, commissioned by harpsichordist Sylvia Marlowe, represented a turning point in the style of one of America's most honored composers, from formalistic neoclassiciam to intense exploration with tone colors and technique; it boasts a dominant harpsichord and an unusually spontaneous finale. The Blake Songs--to be performed by tenor Kurt Hansen and oboist Robert Morgan--were among the British visionary's last works, nifty models of precision and concision written for a documentary on Blake's life and times.
