Writer-director Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger) is unusually skilled at modulating between the comic and the tragic, and though the pain of this 9/11 story doesn't pierce as deeply as it should, the laughs are consistently humane. A successful Manhattan dentist (Don Cheadle) reestablishes ties with his old college roommate (Adam Sandler), whose wife and three daughters died four years earlier in the World Trade Center attacks; now isolated, amnesiac, and prone to paranoid outbursts, he medicates himself with video games and classic rock, embracing a second adolescence that the dentist, an overburdened family man, quietly envies. The story begins to creak badly in the last act, but both Cheadle and Sandler are funny and poignant throughout. With Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler, and Saffron Burrows. R, 128 min. a Century 12 and CineArts 6, Chatham 14, Cicero ShowPlace 14, Crown Village 18, Davis, Ford City, Gardens 1-6, Lake, Norridge, River East 21, Webster Place. --J.R. Jones
