Re: “Zapatista Cantina

One link in the chain of Mainstay Hospitality's South Loop empire, Zapatista has a pretty room, helpful waitstaff and surprisingly moderately-priced food for the neighborhood's rising restaurant scene. But while the menu and presentation still enticed, the flavor has dropped a few notches since I last ate there over the summer. Even the margaritas were a little watery.

"The tacos wouldn't give Chipotle a run for their money," observed one of my dining companions.
Shrimp Sinaloa, which another companion ordered and I tasted, had a little more zest, but my tablemate complained that the creamy chipotle sauce was too salty.

I had the chile relleno. They offer the standard version with cheese, or with a chipotle chicken stuffing, which was new to me, so I tried it. It looked pretty and, again, tasted bland. Next time I'll go to my neighbor's house in Back of the Yards for a version with more sabor.

The only one of us who was really happy with dinner had the pork tenderloin with chorizo. The chorizo had some flavor, not just heat, and the pork was very tender. Seems like pork is your best bet here. My companion who had the tacos ordered one pork, two steak. He didn't offer me a bite of the steak, saying it was so bland it wasn't worth sharing.

So, Zapatista might be a cheapish after-work drink and appetizer, but it won't be starting any dining revolutions in the South Loop.
