Company directors Lucy Riner and Michael Estanich set their works in distinctive, fully imagined environments. For The Lonely Visitors, the stage is dressed with eight chairs; a line of "snow" falls intermittently midstage and fragrance wafts from fresh lavender in a wheeled cart. The 45-minute octet--about "how close love and sadness are," as Estanich puts it--is divided into 30 sections of ten seconds to two minutes apiece. But a collage of spoken texts and longer musical selections (both recorded and sung live) tends to blur the borders between those sections. The chairs, representing home and safety, act as emotional and structural anchors. The piece begins with the performers sitting quietly in a line, then moving tentatively--while remaining seated--into loving or curious gestures, such as lifting a pants leg to touch another person's shin. Later they fly off the chairs, move them around the stage, twirl them. And when two dancers stand on one seat, precariously negotiating their tiny shared space, it's a bang-on metaphor for live-in relationships. --Laura Molzahn
