Red Tails

George Lucas served as executive producer for this effects-heavy action film about the Tuskegee Airmen, and it feels as synthetic and dull as The Phantom Menace. The film's depiction of Italy in World War II feels like a second- or third-hand memory (and sometimes looks like a computer-game backdrop), and the characters are blatant composites of old war-movie archetypes. This is so generic as storytelling that it fails even as a basic history lesson: it's hard to believe that the stock conflicts on-screen have any connection to real events. With the exception of Cuba Gooding Jr. (who delivers his lines as though he learned them phonetically), the actors do their best with the material. TV veteran Anthony Hemingway directed.
