Anthony Hopkins returns yet again as Hannibal Lecter, though this adaptation of Thomas Harris's first Lecter novel is more reminiscent of The Silence of the Lambs than of 2001's Hannibal. Edward Norton, continuing to squander all that press calling him “the finest actor of his generation,” plays an FBI agent who nabs the diabolical doctor, then takes on a case involving two families who have been slaughtered in their beds and must turn to the mad psychiatrist for help. Ralph Fiennes plays the murderer, a sort of watered-down Norman Bates, and Emily Watson is the blind girl who's got a thing for him; Frank Whaley and Philip Seymour Hoffman play minor characters so annoying they might as well wear T-shirts reading “Eat My Brain.” Brett Rattner directed. 124 min.
