Eric Bogosian's twist on The Blue Angel pits a celebrated novelist (Steve Wilson) against an attractive, mysterious grad student (Erin Barlow) in a blistering evening of combative sex and literary conversation. Joshua Aaron Weinstein's thoughtful and calibrated production in the tiny Side Studio space (made to feel much more expansive by Anders Jacobson's terrific book-lined set) teases out the tensions with wit and intelligence. The older-man-undone-by-younger-woman story has its hoarier aspects (subtlety isn't one of Bogosian's strong suits), but I believed almost every moment onstage, and Wilson and Barlow blow the doors off the more incendiary moments without ever losing their grip on the engrossing interplay of competition, passion, and power threaded throughout the narrative. --Kerry Reid
