Horror, Suspense/Thriller
A lightweight TV reporter (Manuela Velasco) and her cameraman, taping a day-in-the-life piece about a Barcelona fire station, accompany the squad to an apartment building and wind up barricaded inside by the health department as an epidemic spreads from one person to the next, turning them all into rabid psychos. This Spanish horror flick (2007) combines the zombie hysteria of George A. Romero’s Dead movies and the mockumentary gimmick of The Blair Witch Project, with all the usual narrative contortions to keep the tape rolling and the lens pointed in the right direction when any sane person would drop the camera and run. If you can tolerate 79 minutes of joggling images you’ll probably find this entertaining, though writer-directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza overplay their hand with a late-breaking back story that rips off one movie too many. Remade in the U.S. as Quarantine. In Spanish with subtitles.
