[Rec] 2 | Chicago Reader

[Rec] 2

Like a lot of number-two's, this 2009 sequel to the Spanish horror hit [Rec] gets as much mileage as possible from the original movie's gimmick and dutifully lays some narrative tracks for a potential franchise. [Rec] combined the fake-verite device from The Blair Witch Project with the survival drama of George A. Romero's Dead movies, as a TV reporter and her cameraman tape their exploits inside a quarantined apartment building lousy with shrieking, contagious psychos. This time around, the lenses are supplied by a special investigator (Jonathan Mellor) leading a pair of SWAT commandos into the building, and, when that starts to get dull, some idiot teenagers who've decided to sneak in and find out what's going on. As it turns out, what's going on is yet another cinematic rip-off, this time of The Exorcist. Apparently rec stands not for record but for recycle. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza directed. In Spanish with subtitles.
