Right before the election, a prospective voter in the 39th Ward got the divine word on the race between Margaret Laurino and Anthony Fornelli from a precinct captain who called to say, "All that stuff you've read in the paper about ghost payrollers, payroll padding, captains involved in insurance cheating schemes--well, it's not true. It's all a bunch of lies." The voter asked meekly how the captain knew that. "Because Mayor Daley endorsed her, that's how."
