Re: “Dailies toss a few more off the back of the wagon

Well, at least when you are laid-off, it's because they only care about money, rather than being forced out because they hate your politics. The news media has always been a glass house of hypocrisy. The best thing that ever happened to me was leaving it and redefining my own writing and communications style my own way. Chuck Berman is one of the good guys and it is a mixed bag. I hate to see him leave something he loves so much, and yet he's free to enjoy life.

Re: “A reminder to Mayor Rahm's 2015 opponents: It's a runoff, dummies!

With the vote divided, Rahm has a stronger chance of winning more than 50 percent of the vote. The reality works against the logic. The more challengers out there, the stronger the incumbents vote. The fewer the challengers, the lower the incumbent's vote. The fact is that many voters who oppose Rahm and see him for the failed mayor that he is, also look at the divisions and are discouraged when there are too many challengers in the race. Too many challengers in a race is a sure sign an incumbent is going to win, so it discourages independence and foes of the incumbents from coming out. But Chuy and Bill Kelly will get the publicity they want, a few minutes in the sun at the expense of the best interests of the voters.

Re: “Now disappearing behind a pay wall—Rob Feder!

The sad truth is you don't have to buy a newspaper any more to read a news story in your community or in the region. I get the local newspaper for free in Orland Park, and it's GREAT, the Prairie. I go online and I get the news FREE. The problem with the news media is they suck as a profession. They're everything they claim they are not. Feder is a good writer and knows his beat well. I worked with him and got to know him well. But I don't see people paying for it. (The idea of paying for everything online is impossible and not practical. I can't pay to read every columnist out there. I can pay for aggregate news groupings, like the Washington Post and New York Times.)

But as I understand it, Rob will do well through his relationship with the Tribune. Online subscribers there will get his column. But the vast majority, which I think is just as important as money, might be lost. But I have a feeling that I will be able to read his columns anyway.

The good news is I won't have to wade through fawning over Steve Dahl and other stories like that.Just my two Shekels.

Re: “The University of Illinois says Steven Salaita is too rude for school

An American is fired from a promised job because the University if Illinois at Champaign Urbana is upset that he criticized ... a FOREIGN COUNTRY ... so pathetic. So weak. So cowardly. So spineless. It's a black mark against Chris Kennedy more than against Phyllis Wise who is his puppet, a true disgrace to an academic institution that values McCarthyism more than American Constitutional Principles. Most Americans wouldn't qualify for a job at UIUC if this position were in fact applied consistently. But the real reason is Steven Salaita is Palestinian and anti-Arab racism is growing on American campuses. Too bad for America. RAY HANANIA
