Raven, Toxic Holocaust, Wrath, Crusader

When: Thu., Sept. 3, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $20, $18 in advance
John and Mark Gallagher, the brothers who founded Newcastle metal trio Raven 41 years ago, are still at the helm despite adversity that would have destroyed less dedicated men (as an example, a terrible stage accident in 2001 injured Mark’s legs badly enough to keep him in a wheelchair for years). But I suppose their sense of time passing is just different from others—they likely still consider drummer Joe Hasselvander (also of Pentagram) a newbie, though he’s been in Raven since 1987. Their latest album, ExtermiNation, was funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign that rewarded subscribers with an exclusive album of covers as a bonus gift. At 15 tracks in length, ExtermiNation is slightly padded with some unremarkable material, but it’s still sprightly, hooky, and aggressive, and still reminiscent of classic British metal circa 1984. And though by this point that sound is certainly not a “New Wave” of anything, Raven remains a solid crowd favorite, clean and crisp and crowned with John’s love-it-or-leave-it vocal style.
