Randy Rogers Band, Trishas Recommended Soundboard

The four friends in this Austin quartet, none of whom are named Trisha, got together on a lark in January 2009 to sing at a tribute concert for veteran roots singer Kevin Welch (his daughter Savannah is one of the Trishas). They chose the name because one of the songs they sang was “That’s What I Like About You,” a Kevin Welch number that had been a hit for Trisha Yearwood in 1991. The group’s performance went over great—and assuming it sounded like their 2012 debut album, High, Wide & Handsome (Trishas Music), I have no trouble seeing why. The Trishas’ mastery of close-harmony singing and 70s country styles is irresistible. At least one member shares writing credits on every one of the record’s 14 tunes, which combine honky-tonk, country folk, and country soul, and the women’s forceful voices blend together to give the supercatchy melodies a honeyed sweetness. The music might sound retro if it weren’t for the polished production of Mike Poole, which thankfully doesn’t buff away any of its personality. —Peter Margasak The Randy Rogers Band headlines.
