Adventure, Comedy
Ramona Quimby, the rambunctious schoolgirl of Beverly Cleary's books, finally arrives on the big screen after 60 years, and aside from a few slapstick set pieces (most notably, a car wash that leaves the vehicle covered in multicolored paint), this adaptation preserves the sense of everyday childhood that's made Cleary a mainstay of children's literature. The movie is weirdly anachronistic, with its gawky character names out of the 1950s (Henry Huggins, Uncle Hobart, Howie Kemp) and its soundtrack of 80s pop hits ("Eternal Flame," "Walking on Sunshine"), but that probably won’t bother your eight-year-old. For the grown-ups there are sweet, sincere performances by Ginnifer Goodwin, Sandra Oh, and, as Ramona's endlessly game father, the likable John Corbett, relieved for once of his drippy rom-com duties. Elizabeth Allen directed.
