The DePaul University School of Music welcomes home composer George Perle, its most famous alumnus, for a special 75th birthday celebration. Perle remains one of the most distinctive composers of our time, despite his usual misclassification as a serialist. This designation stems in part from the fact that he wrote the standard textbook on the 12-tone compositional methods pioneered by Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, but Perle's own music has only been 12-tone in the sense that he incorporates all notes equally in his works; he does not, nor has he ever, incorporated 12-tone rows in strict sequence. In a time of considerable chaos and ambiguity in newmusic circles, Perle has developed a unique and imaginative musical language that stands in direct line to not only the Viennese serialists but to Stravinsky, Bartok, Scriabin--even Debussy--as well. His music is quite accessible and thriving in a time when conventional, 12-tone compositions are heard less and less in concert halls. This special DePaul birthday concert--which Perle himself will attend--will include his Concertino for Piano, Winds, and Timpani, which has become a standard contemporary repertoire piece since its premiere here in 1978, and his 1986 Pulitzer Prizewinning Wind Quintet IV. Performers include CSO members Mary Sauer and Larry Combs, among others. Tonight, 8 PM, DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden; 341-8373.
