Rafea: Solar Mama

Expanded from an episode of the public TV series Independent Lens, this conventional 2012 documentary follows an illiterate Bedouin as she attends a specialized college that trains Third World women to become solar engineers. Directors Mona Eldaief and Jehane Noujaim seem uninterested in aesthetics, but the story, detailing the woman's valiant efforts to bring prosperity to her impoverished village, is genuinely inspiring and devoid of the blandly humanist pandering found in some social awareness docs. In English and subtitled Arabic.
