Four years ago, MPAACT presented Relevant Hearsay, based on Shirley Carney's stories about her life as a fiftysomething African-American woman in small-town Texas. This latest installment of Carney's work, adapted by Shepsu Aakhu, bifurcates between Carney's own life (including a big secret she finally shares, rather anticlimactically, with her grown son) and stories of other women--a promiscuous teenage girl, a dying old woman--abandoned or ignored by their families. The material connecting the stories feels contrived, but Kimberly Crutcher's ensemble imbue the characters with warmth, wit, and an abundant sense of compassion. There's nothing particularly radical or revelatory in Carney's tales, but hearing an older black woman speak for herself, unmediated by Oprah, is breakthrough enough. --Kerry Reid
