Every element in Porchlight Music Theatre's spirited revival of Stephen Sondheim's 1992 musical revue works. The songs sparkle, the cast sizzles, and John Zuiker's simple set is gorgeous. Of course, it's hard not to get pulled in when everybody onstage clearly loves Sondheim's lively but difficult tunes and compulsively clever lyrics. The singers savor every syllable. And the band keeps jamming through intermission and even for a bit after the final curtain. Brenda Didier's small, tight ensemble is packed with standouts. There are particularly strong performances from Adam Pelty (reeking of Sondheimian world-weariness), McKinley Carter, and new comer Aja Goes, who's equally adept at playing clueless ingenues and fearful, neurotic ones. --Jack Helbig
