Purling Hiss, Teepee, Axis:sova

When: Mon., April 15, 9 p.m. 2013
Listen to the winding freak-outs and overblown, grimy guitar solos on Purling Hiss’s self-titled 2009 Permanent Records release. Now spin a track from the new Water on Mars (Drag City). Sound like the same band? That’s because it’s not. Philadelphia ax master Mike Polizze, formerly a one-man band, has recruited drummer Mike Sneeringer and bassist Kiel Everett to bookend his wild ambition and keep it focused, if not exactly under control. The new album’s opener, “Lolita,” has the same character as old Purling Hiss—thick, sustained fuzz guitar and throaty rock ’n’ roll yowling—but Polizze does his noisy experimenting within a framework, albeit a loose one. Water on Mars is a mix of loud-leaning 90s alt-rock (think Dinosaur Jr.), judiciously applied feedback, Marc Bolan glam, and, well, gnarly old Purling Hiss. Polizze’s newfound restraint would only be something worth arguing about if those elements didn’t sound exactly excellent together. —Kevin Warwick Teepee and Axis:Sova open.
