Pullman Hobo Gathering

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Sept. 7 2008
A lot of the old boys at the National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa, last month said they were headed to Chicago for this once-annual event that kind of petered out after 9/11. A welcoming dinner Sat 9/6, 4:30 PM, at the Greenstone Church, 11201 S. Saint Lawrence, is followed by a 7 PM Grand Hobo Concert with Luther the Jet on the church's tracker action organ (a type which is said to be really physically demanding to play). The doings Sun 9/7, 1-6 PM, are centered around the Pullman Stables. There are demonstrations of crafts, stories, and songs, and SIU grad student Ashley Green lectures on "Hobos, Tramps, and Bums: There Is a Difference." The "world's largest pot of mulligan stew" (made from donations from local gardens) will feed the crowd at the barn dance, and folks can camp Saturday night in the hobo jungle in Pullman Park.
