Psychic Says

A Look Into the Political Future

1994 may now seem like a firework that only fizzled, but 1995 is ready to explode. Such possibilities! The tabloids are now churning out their standard predictions for the coming year. But for those not interested in the usual parade of movie stars and talk show hosts, we offer these local predictions--a glimpse ahead to the events that will reinstate Chicago as the great Roman candle of American politics.

Our consultant is Christi Paschen, a Chicago "psychic, teacher, minister" who does private consultations in clients' homes. We asked her what's in store for some of our favorite players.

Daley Digs In!

What do you see for Mayor Richard Daley?

I see he'll win again. What I see in my head is the winner's party. I see him shaking the hand of someone and smiling.

What about the casino complex?

I see, ultimately, yes. But it will run into problems. It won't be until he is reelected once again that anything will happen.

Note to Rosty: Cancel Christmas

And Dan Rostenkowski?

He's in a world of shit. The only thing I see over him is a black cloud that's not going away. He's got at least a five-year period where that cloud is there. He may be ill before the end of this because it's almost as if I can't go beyond that five years. There's more to come, though. Something about income tax evasion. There's just a world of shit for him.

And Mike Flanagan, his successor?

At the moment all I see is brightness around him, almost like there's a fresh breeze blowing past him.

Musical Chairs With Mel

What about Mel Reynolds?

Who?

The freshman congressman who is up on child sex charges.

He's in trouble. There's a lot of stuff there that he's spending a lot of time just trying to keep buried. He will have something that will eventually stick, but it's a question of what because I can see five or six different issues there and they're dancing around him, and I know one of them will be the one that catches him, but I don't know which one. I see prison time there.

City for Sale

What do you see for the CHA?

In time, and I'm looking at a time line that's quite long, over the next 10, 15 years, Cabrini will be sold off to private enterprise. Almost as though corporations buy it and subsidize it themselves. But it will be private industry altogether.

And the CTA?

I don't see the CTA anymore. We're talking five to seven years from now, ultimately it is bought out and run as a private corporation. But it's not going to be just the CTA. It's going to be a megacorporation, because I see trains, buses, the RTA, the Pace system. But it will be an improvement.

The Center Ring

What will be the major event of 1995 in Chicago?

There's a conference of some sort. I'm trying to look for a time frame. July to September of next year. A major conference that will come through here. It will start out negative when it first hits the news, but the long-term outlook is positive because it will induce some legislation for--um--I wish I could get a clearer picture. It's something to do with cleanup. I can't tell you if it's a political cleanup or a physical one.

Anything else?

I see some sort of shakeup in the police department. A major shakeup. I don't see anything else.

Don't believe us? Tear this out of the paper right now and bury it in the backyard so you can dig it up next January. And remember: you read it here first.
