Mercenaries Russell Crowe and David Caruso retrieve kidnapped employees for the clients of an insurance company—corporations whose politically incorrect projects make it seem that the abductors are interested in something besides money. After reminding Meg Ryan—as if she didn't know—about a recent event that's put a strain on their marriage, engineer David Morse is kidnapped, and the transparent exposition gives way to subtly romantic suspense as Crowe and Ryan pursue what becomes an ironic common goal, the safe return of her husband. Against the lush backdrop of the Andes, Crowe and Caruso define on-screen cool: good guys in a match of wits and firepower who even talk about their emotions. Taylor Hackford directed a screenplay by Tony Gilroy inspired by a Vanity Fair article by William Prochnau and a memoir by Thomas Hargrove. 135 min.
