East-side MC Vic Spencer raps like a drill sergeant, enunciating every syllable and sometimes delivering entire stanzas in a tightly wound growl—it’s as though he’s waiting to let his deep bark off its chain, and when he does it can be kind of terrifying. Spencer’s flow can be a bit stiff, but he’s able to relax with the help of a good producer—and he’s found one in French producer Ikaz, who collaborated with him for the recent Spence Ethic mixtape. Particularly on “Devil Traits” (with its wobbly jazz-piano hook) and the MC Tree-assisted “Duck Sauce” (with its bubbling electronic loop), Spencer lets loose and follows the beat wherever it leads him. It sounds like the drill sergeant is kicking it with the new recruits and smoking them up behind the barracks. —Leor Galil Probcause headlines; Vic Spencer, Fitz Fonzarelli, Kidd tha Chicagoan, Philosopha, Sincere, Duke, Uptown Celebrities, and Maestro open.
