Pernilla August and Samuel Froler reprise the roles of Anna and Henrik Bergman from The Best Intentions (1992) in this episodic drama directed by Liv Ullmann, written by Ingmar Bergman, and shot by Sven Nykvist, which poses intriguing questions about the nature of authorship as it explores the nature of confession. Months or years elapse between sections of the story, which flashes forward and back to depict a woman's informal confession to an aging priest, what she does with the advice he gives her, and the genesis of her spiritual quandary. Each sequence is introduced by an intertitle suggesting it will contain an isolated conversation, an archly inaccurate notion that deepens the drama by appearing to deny its complexity. With Max von Sydow and Thomas Hanzon.
