In this coming-of-age play by Aaron Holland, a timid young gay man named Amari hides himself away in the home he shares with his domineering mother. It's up to a passel of flamboyant acquaintances—including a wise bodega owner, three obnoxious club kids, and a kind of fairy drag-mother—to draw Amari out and into the light of self-acceptance. The program says Holland was inspired by characters in War and Peace, but any resemblance to Tolstoy is purely superficial. Though the script has a rambunctious energy, it's shallow and unfocused, flitting from cartoonish comedy to howling melodrama to cloying schmaltz. Lili-Anne Brown declines to impose any restraint in her staging for Bailiwick Chicago, resulting in flagrant overplaying from the cast. —Zac Thompson
