Actresses Candela Peña and Micaela Nevarez both won Goya awards (Spanish Oscars) for this melodrama about rival prostitutes in Madrid who become close friends. Peña plays an uneducated nonconformist whose close-knit middle-class family is oblivious to her occupation; Nevarez is an illegal immigrant who sells her body to support her son in the Dominican Republic. Writer-director Fernando Leon de Aranoa (Mondays in the Sun) presents a sanitized portrait of call girls; in real life more hookers wind up looking like the movie's emaciated methadone junkie (a haunting Maria Ballesteros) than the well-fed concubine who treats her pals to a ride in a government limousine. In Spanish with subtitles. 114 min.
