Comedy drama, Docudrama
Schmaltzy and formulaic, but also lively and sincere, this British docudrama revisits a 1984 episode in which gay and lesbian activists in London declared solidarity with, and raised money and support for, striking miners in a small Welsh town. The film is respectful of the strike but focuses chiefly on how the straight townspeople overcome their homophobia, their evolution signaling a growing acceptance of gay people in the British mainstream. This feels like a musical in its unrelenting sunniness and broad performances (dancing also figures in the plot); I had a hard time resisting its charm. Matthew Warchus directed; with Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, and Andrew Scott.
