Re: "Out of Their League" [January 18]

As someone who has helped immigrants for many years, I am particularly aware of their vulnerability and treat them as a "protected class" of people. I've heard of cabdrivers who, upon pulling up to toll booths coming from the airports, extract large sums of money from the new arrivals telling them they are immigration fee stations. I know people who paid $6,000 for 3 visa extensions that cost $120 apiece and take about an hour of paperwork. Immigrants are easy prey for greedy predators, which include lawyers, real estate people, and even cabdrivers. The Cambodian story didn't surprise me but again made me question my decision to stay in a city where exploitation of the vulnerable runs rampant and unchecked.
