Before starting this duo project, Nick Kraska (drums, drum machine, bass) and Rachel Shindelman (vocals, keyboards) not only played together in the New Black and Bang! Bang! but also got married. Post Honeymoon’s debut EP, Between the Two, was solid, but their new self-titled album for Two Thumbs Down is a force of nature. Simpler and sultrier than either the jaunty “sex rock” of Bang! Bang! or the dark, wild robot punk of the New Black, their music updates and distills several streams of gothy early-80s postpunk: a touch of Birthday Party-style fuzz and filth, a bit of Siouxsie’s elegant exoticism, a hint of the trippy tunefulness of late Bauhaus. Shindelman’s full, spooky voice also reminds me a little of PJ Harvey, but it’s chillier—like Polly might sound if she’d just come back from the dead. Though all these elements are familiar, Post Honeymoon turn them into something all their own, creating a skeletal style that leaves plenty of pregnant airspace between its blasts of noise. Reds and Blue and Bengal Lancer open. —Monica Kendrick
