Last year’s documentary about Nashville oddball Bobby Bare Jr. titled Don’t Follow Me (I’m Lost) reveals some pretty basic truths. Like so many other midlevel musicians who eke out livings through touring, he finds his career floundering because his records don’t sell, and his home life suffers because he can’t afford not to be on the road. The film isn’t terrible, but it’s about as illuminating as a five-watt bulb. As is the case with most music documentaries, though, the saving grace is the performance footage. Bare Jr.’s bemused persona and raucous roots rock provide lots of shaggy-dog appeal, and thanks to Bloodshot the music is conveniently isolated on a soundtrack release that spotlights the sparkling combo of his soulful rasp and his easy fluency when it comes to raunchy rock, honky-tonk, and blue-eyed soul. He’s a terrific, self-effacing performer, the kind to play down the overblown commotion that’s inevitable when spending New Year’s Eve in a rock club.
