A gigantic slab of American cheese, The Poseidon Adventure (1972) was typical of the Vietnam-era disaster movies: apart from the spectacle of wholesale destruction, its dramatic focus was the question of leadership, as passengers aboard an overturned ocean liner tried to decide whose cockamamy plan would deliver them from doom. After 9/11 and Katrina, this megabudget remake by Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) benefits from a similar cultural oomph, though it's just as enjoyably silly as the original. With Kurt Russell (as the former mayor of New York), Josh Lucas (as his antagonist, a professional gambler), Andre Braugher, Jacinda Barrett, Emmy Rossum, Kevin Dillon, and Richard Dreyfuss in the Red Buttons role—giant shoes for any man to fill. PG-13, 100 min.
