The first and probably least (1938) of the collaborations between screenwriter Jacques Prevert and director Marcel Carne, the team later responsible for Le jour se leve and Children of Paradise. In the port city of Le Havre a deserter from the French army (Jean Gabin) meets an orphan girl (Michele Morgan); he tries to save her from her sinister guardian (Michel Simon), fails, and is killed. The tone of poetic pessimism is typical of the French films of the period. Eugen Shuftan's photography would recommend a much worse film. In French with subtitles.
