Befuddling dining room/caterer/candy store/bed and breakfast next to an old Lithuanian movie theater.

Our Review

Next door to an old Lithuanian movie theater, the main dining area at Polo Cafe and Catering is a former ice cream parlor lined with booths, doll lamps, and large globes of candy--somewhat bizarre surroundings for enjoying drinks and dinner. Starting with the seafood platter, $20 got us a spread of shrimp, crab cakes, and calamari, all fried with pretty much the same seasoning and ham-fisted disregard for individual ingredients. I popped for the one-pound rib eye, and for $36.50 received a good piece of meat…along with alarmingly ill-prepared "grilled vegetables," uncooked though sheathed in slimy creosote, and french fries that were factory cut and previously frozen--not what you’d expect for a premium price. My partner’s three lamb chops ($19.50) netted out to about five ounces of meat-- again, kind of a disappointment, and like the steak, delivered to the table almost cool to the touch. A fennel salad with orange slices proved an inspired blend of licoricey root, citrus, and romaine with a touch of Parmesan. In the final analysis, I was befuddled by this banquet hall/cafe/candy store/bed and breakfast (upstairs; no kidding). What is it? You got me.
