This is a past event.
It may be true that, as Plus Size playwright Robert Bledsoe points out in the program, obesity and diabetes are big health problems in America today, particularly in black communities. But what kind of subject matter does it make for a play? Plus Size is ostensibly the story of Belinda, an intelligent, kind, and successful young woman devastated to learn that her friends consider her their DFF—"designated fat friend." So, with the help of a fitness DVD, she resolves to change her life. And then her family and friends debate the wisdom of her decision in a series of tedious speeches that sound like outtakes from a freshman comp point-counterpoint assignment. Apparently Bledsoe forgot that he was supposed to be creating actual characters, not just showing all sides of an issue. —Aimee Levitt
