Sal Yvett (left), Madison McFerrin's wardrobe stylist, says she's currently inspired by Tracee Ellis Ross. "I'm trying to give a little southern-Tracee cowboy glamour right now," she says. Her friend Don also went for the "glam cowboy" look—"Maybe a cowboy who could also strip."

Madison McFerrin's look on Sunday was all about volume and unexpected shapes.

Local braiding artist Shani Crowe fashioned a "pony-bead tiara" to complement McFerrin's ruffled top.

Crowe (above) has been featured in Elle and other national publications, but likes to stay close to home: "In my work I like to use a lot of materials that are accessible," she says. "This way you can take those cheap materials and transform them into beautiful things. I'm from the south side, and in my neighborhood there are the best local beauty supplies—that’s where you get the good stuff." Her favorite store is Star Beauty Supply at 75th Street and Stony Island.

McFerrin's stylist Sal Yvett and another friend were all roses on Sunday.

Colleen, 39, teacher: "I'm wearing a J.Crew jumpsuit and a cape I bought in Chile in Valparaíso. I usually like to buy a souvenir I can wear. And there are very few occasions where I'm like 'This is a dragon-coat occasion.' Tonight was one of them."

Mason, 22, student: "This is stuff I found in my house from my dad’s old clothes. I just wanted to wear something fun and cool. Most of this is kinda silly—I wouldn't normally wear it."

Dee, 36, marketing manager: "My top is from Rick Owens—he's a voracious biography reader, and I like to learn about those stories through his clothing. This top has a kind of Mondrian aesthetic, but in more muted tones. This long piece of fabric adds a lot of movement to it."

Kaila, 26, pianist, and Miles, software developer: "I bought this dress on Etsy. I really like 80s fashion—when I was little I was a big Cyndi Lauper fan," says Kaila. Her friend Miles has a more practical approach to fashion: "This is all old stuff I've had for a while. I like to be comfortable and warm." His sneakers were noteworthy, though: they're by Keep, a brand that featured a special edition designed by Panda Bear.

Brice, producer: "This is a soccer jersey from an English friend of mine, and pants that I got from a vintage store during a job I was doing. I wanted to be comfy and functional.” As for her Chanel jersey, she says the brand "means luxury, history, feminine power, and elegance," but "combining it with a sport is what I loved about this top."

Friends Kate and Kevin went for a western vibe that took them back to their childhood homes.

Vocalist, composer, and improviser Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux wore a collection of items she feels good in: cigarette pants with a leather strap that perfectly matched her worn-out boots from Alcala's, and plenty of accessories with special meaning—a handkerchief given to her by a good friend, necklaces inherited from her grandmother, a "funky thing" she got while traveling. She says the outfit that resulted is "like tons of home I can wear around on me. I'm performing tonight, so these are actually for good luck."

Kati, Art Institute executive director of public affairs: “I love to add a little fun to every outfit and these Kate Spade boots deliver on novelty—who can resist sequin cheetahs? I found the cape on the clearance rack and couldn't believe my luck, so I'm always trying to find creative ways to incorporate it into my outfits.”

Le1f, musician: “My coat is from a designer in Montreal, Ben Lafaille—like total French, darling! This is from his first collection out of college. He made these awesome fun coats with prints like flowers and knives on the back.”
Isa Giallorenzo
Emily, 22, engineering student: “This suit is by a brand from Toronto called 100% Silk—I like to shop as much as I can from local designers. This chain I got from the hardware store.”
