Over the past decade the Pine Leaf Boys have arguably established themselves as the finest current practitioners of Cajun music. Accordionist and singer Wilson Savoy, son of Cajun star Marc Savoy, has the stuff in his blood, and the other members of this southwest Louisiana combo have served in some of the bayou’s greatest ensembles, including Balfa Toujours and the Lost Bayou Ramblers; a few of them have also appeared on the HBO series Treme. On the group’s most recent album, 2013’s Danser (Valcour), they live up to those bona fides, playing charged waltzes spiked by soulful Creole-language singing, and branch out into honky-tonk ballads (“A Picture of Me Without You”) and lovely swamp pop (a cover of Dale and Grace’s “What Am I Living For”). Always front and center is the band’s traditional social function, and by bridging past and present they can keep a dance floor packed. —Peter Margasak
